What is a Birth Doula?
A doula is a non-medical support person specifically and professionally trained in childbirth. Doulas provide emotional & physical support, educational information, and practical assistance throughout pregnancy, delivery and the early postpartum time.
Doulas are NOT midwives.
A doula recognizes birth as a key life experience. They understand the physiology of birth, as well as the emotional needs of a woman transitioning into motherhood. Doulas provide evidence based information to help parents make the best decisions for their birth experience, and support all decisions with an open heart and supportive hand to hold.
In centuries past, women gave birth in familiar surroundings amid family members and friends that had experience with childbirth. The more modern term “doula” has stemmed from that vast history of loving support.
Doulas are also known as a Birth Companions, Professional Birth Coaches, and Birth Support Team Members.
No matter the term used, your doula is there to help you through this momentous time in your life.
Benefits of hiring a doula:
- Decreased chance of cesarean by 28%
- Decreased length of labor by 25%
- Decreased need for forceps delivery by 40%
- Decreased negative childbirth experience by 34%
